Summer Youth
This is how it feels to be young again
Oh nostalgia, you pierce my heart like a double-edged sword. How selfish are the writers who wield you, choosing to make us relive those beautiful moments and spreading it by sword, only to remind us how far our small lives have drifted. But despite the ache you bring, I thank you, because for a brief moment, we relived our happiest memories. And it is in that fragile space between what was and what remains that this poet wrote this piece.
Meet PancakeSushi
I think we have to start by admitting this writer has one of the coolest names in Substack history. But even that comes second to what he actually does. PancakeSushi writes poetry and reflective essays, most if not all loaded with emotional density, and the best way I can describe him is a poet who writes like a philosopher.
Why Read This Writer
PancakeSushi already has a strong collection of pieces out, which means new readers have plenty to explore right away. And don’t let the amount of work intimidate you. Since he mainly writes poetry and reflective essays, you can start anywhere and never feel like you missed something. If you’re into deep reflection, emotional honesty, or those nostalgic moments, you’ll find a lot here to connect with.
Where To Start
Like I said above, you really can’t go wrong picking your first piece. But if you want a little direction, I’d happily point you to the one I very much enjoyed called “Idyll of Youth.” It’s the poem that inspired the intro to this whole shoutout. “Idyll of Youth.” pulls you straight back into that golden stretch of youth when life felt endless, simple, and somehow lighter. If there’s one piece of his I’d want you to read first, it’s definitely that one. But seriously, whatever you choose, you’re in for something good.
Those days, we grasped, we roared
We wrestled the clock for sport
We took all there was from life
